PEACHTREE CREEK GREENWAY
ABOUT
The Peachtree Creek Greenway Phase II Extension is an exciting trail project that aims to connect Phase II of the Peachtree Creek Greenway in Brookhaven with PATH 400 in Atlanta, completing a crucial missing link in the regional trail network. This extension will become an integral part of the expansive 12.3-mile Peachtree Creek Greenway, spanning from the Atlanta BeltLine to DeKalb County, weaving through Atlanta, Brookhaven, Chamblee, and Doraville. Designed to meet regional standards, the trail will feature a 14-foot-wide shared-use path enhanced by lighting, public art, and various amenities. The project presents unique challenges due to the difficult terrain, potentially necessitating retaining walls, slab structures, and bridges to ensure a seamless pathway. Once completed, the shared-use path will facilitate the enjoyment of the natural environment while providing access and connectivity to regional activity centers, employment opportunities, transit, and affordable housing.
The Peachtree Creek Greenway has already secured grant funding for preliminary engineering and design activities through the FY 2021 Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP) Solicitation. This grant includes vital federal matching funds, supporting critical tasks like finalizing NEPA-related environmental documentation for the greenway.
At its core, the Peachtree Creek Greenway envisions a versatile, multi-use trail, fostering connections among the communities along the North Fork of Peachtree Creek while offering direct access to the creek corridor as a community amenity. The proposed trail alignment follows the creek’s path northeast from the Atlanta BeltLine into Brookhaven, Chamblee, Doraville, and unincorporated DeKalb County. Portions of the trail in the City of Brookhaven are currently constructed, and Brookhaven has extended the trail southwest to the Brookhaven-Atlanta boundary.
The Peachtree Creek Greenway Phase II Extension is a perfect example of how we are designing for people, designing for nature, and designing for people in nature. In addition to providing a car-free connection between Atlanta and Brookhaven, the path will serve as a pathway for shared adventures, enriching experiences, and engaging with nature.
