Preservation at Work October 21st-26th

The Department of City Planning celebrates the rich history of Atlanta and seeks to preserve it with our Future Places Project. The Future Places Project is an effort to ensure that Atlanta is well-positioned to champion and enact a wide range of historic preservation-related initiatives for years to come. In doing so, it is important to highlight the heritage of historic people, places, and events.

Historic Preservation Week offers a unique opportunity for Atlantans to deepen their understanding of our city's past and engage in meaningful discussions. Launched during the pandemic in late October 2020, the week kicked off with a virtual tour of South View Cemetery, a workshop on what defines a historic building, and a discussion on racial equity in preservation efforts.

In October 2021, we presented a lecture series titled "Our Shared Legacy," which fostered insightful conversations about the impact of universities, religious institutions, businesses, and families on Atlanta's history. Participants left with a greater appreciation for these vital contributions.

Every year, our team is committed to providing engaging and educational experiences in various formats. In 2022 and 2023, we offered Parks Tours that explored the historical significance of Atlanta's parks, allowing participants to share their own stories and memories in these cherished public spaces.

Stay tuned as the Historic Preservation Studio continues its mission to share knowledge, increase understanding and allow open dialogue through thoughtful programming and initiatives.
