SOUTH BROAD

Since our relocation to Broad Street in the Summer of 2019, the Studio’s focus has primarily been on the growth and development of Downtown. One of our initial projects was reimagining one block of Broad Street SW and how it works to connect to the surrounding area. The project was selected based on feedback from the community to have more activity on the block, and to slow down traffic moving through the space. The goals align with the Downtown Atlanta Master Plan approved by City Council in 2017. The interim improvements on Broad Street will test the feasibility for future enhancements, which will be implemented in conjunction with the Downtown Atlanta Master Plan.

The design consists of traffic calming measures and protected pedestrian spaces implemented through tactical sidewalk extensions. The sidewalk extensions are protected with traffic control devices that deter cars from entering pedestrian-only spaces. Also included in the design is a telescopic barrier installed at the southern end of the block. This device prohibits cars form entering the space during the weekends and on market days. The telescopic barrier doubles as a beautification planter and will be retracted during work days. Additionally, artistic crosswalks and color will be added to the sidewalk extensions.
